Today Is That Day
By Derick Turner
Driving to work today I had two thoughts. The first was how much I really didn’t want to be going to work.
Don’t get me wrong, I like my work, it’s just that it’s not my work. You see, even though I’m blogging, coaching, and presenting workshops occasionally, I’m still not able to do it full-time. I want to be, but I’m just not there yet. So, every day I drive to a job that I like, but don’t love.
To be clear, my thought this morning was not a negative “I hate my life” kind of thinking, but rather a moment of clarity that while I like the job I have, I don’t want to be working for someone else forever.
That was my second thought… I really, really want to be doing what I am passionate about, every day, for as long as possible. This site is one of my primary ways of working towards that goal.
As you may notice, I have not been at this blogging thing very long. I’m still in that phase of wondering if/when my voice is actually going to reach people. I know it will eventually, but because I’m so passionate about helping others, I want to see myself doing more of that now, rather than the job I’m currently doing.
I could pretend to be something I’m not, making myself look bigger than I am to try and impress you here on this site, but that is not authentic and not who I am. Besides, if my journey can in any way inspire others to work towards their own goals, then it will have been well worth it.
I’m ok with where I am now though. With clarity about what I don’t want to be doing, and surety in what I do want to be doing, I continue my daily efforts to ultimately accomplish my goals.
The perseverance required to accomplish your goals can sometimes feel daunting, however, the very aspect of pushing forward and fighting through challenges is what makes those goals so incredibly sweet.
To help make the journey perhaps somewhat easier, I want to share three thoughts that can help you as you are working towards your goals.
Take that first step
Reality check… you are never going to get where you want to go if you don’t start moving.
Too simple? Then why are you still standing there?
Whether figuratively or literally, we all tend to stand around daydreaming when a few small steps would give us actual momentum towards our goals.
I get it, the the idea of actually committing to action can feel daunting, but if you are serious about your goals you have to start working towards them.
The feeling of getting past those first few steps is empowering. You will find a new sense of motivation and drive.
I believe I’ve been pretty clear that you first need to know what you are passionate about to make real progress towards your goals. Once you know your passion, you have to just get started.
Don’t let anything stop you from gettin’ going.
Don’t back down
You took those first steps and now you’ve started. I’m very proud of you. You probably saw that it wasn’t as hard as you imagined after all.
Now that you’re moving forward, we need to discuss what tends to happen next.
It’s extremely likely that at some point you are going to stumble. You’ll trip up and you may even fall. It’s ok though, because that is just evidence that you are moving.
You should be taking great confidence in the fact that you are one of the few who are actually working toward your goals.
Most people merely exist through life, reacting to what comes to them. You are choosing to act. You are choosing to create your own future. Take confidence in that and do not stop.
Don’t back down from any challenge, big or small. You have too much purpose and potential.
I want to let you in on a little secret… You are already so much more capable than you give yourself credit for.
You have so much more knowledge, experience, ability and potential than you are probably allowing yourself to realize.
You may be caught up focusing on the things you still haven’t done, but don’t allow yourself to ignore all the many things you have accomplished. You are so much more amazing than anyone knows… even yourself.
Stop doubting, but don’t stop learning. Stop worrying, but don’t stop believing. Most of all, stop STOPPING.
Every step forward carries you closer to your goal, and every step is worthwhile. Carry on and allow your momentum to motivate you.
You are good enough
You are going to face a lot of opposition as you pursue your goals. Unfortunately, the greatest opposition will come from within.
You will be constantly hounded by your past, and every time you try to change or do something different, your past will try reminding you that you may never have been able to do that particular thing before.
Remember this truth… everything you have ever accomplished was once something you had not done before.
That means that one day your current goal will also be something you once didn’t know you could do. When that moment comes, embrace your incredible growth and never again doubt your ability.
You are good enough to do what you have done, so why wouldn’t you be good enough to do what you still want to do?
You can accomplish practically anything in this life you want, if you truly want it bad enough.
You have to take that first step though, and remember to never back down. Persist and carry on, you will soon find yourself on the other side.
Let me know about your victories. I would love the chance to revel in the moment with you. Now, get moving.
